Speech and Language Therapy

Lily and Molly are NHS Speech and Language Therapists who are  part of our Communication and Interaction team, they have a  particular responsibility for students who have been referred to them.

We also employ Emma Cane, a freelance Speech and Language Therapist, two days a week for additional support.

THE CASELOAD OF THE SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIST

Referred pupils should be seen  by the NHS Speech & Language Therapists when their Communication needs have changed or when more targeted support is needed.

When a pupil’s communication needs are being fully met by the school setting, they will be removed from the NHS caseload. They can easily be referred again by parents or class teachers.

School staff can discuss pupils with the Speech & Language Therapist without an official  referral. The other members of the Communication & Interaction team will work with pupils as agreed with the Speech & Language Therapist and with class teachers.

The Speech & Language Therapist will produce a report or review to set Aims & Objectives for the school setting to implement.

HOW DO NHS SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST WORK IN SCHOOL?

Lily and Molly work closely with parents/carers, school staff and other professionals such as occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

They observe pupils in class, for individual therapy and takes small groups and staff may work alongside Lily and Molly to share practise and ensure strategies are embed through the day.

Lily and Molly assess pupils who are new referrals or who may need the support of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). The Communication & Interaction Team work closely with Lily and Molly to ensure PECS and AAC devices are available  throughout the school to meet Communication and Interaction needs.
